Busy doing nothing

Spent the rest of the day doing almost nothing. watched the wildlife… Popped up the road to S S Wreck. A sports bar / restaurant. Less than a mile away, but a suicidal walk in the dark so we ended up having to drive. Watched the Tampa Bay Buccaneers snatch victory in the last minute of play on one of […]

Last full day in the Keys…

This is properly relaxing. I do wish there were a couple of food/drink options in walking distance. Having to drive everywhere is a faff. They are completing an on-site restaurant and bar (in addition to their current tiki bar). Still, with views like this…

Porky’s BBQ

We noticed this particular shack as we passed on our way to Key West. A proper BBQ pit and gets decent reviews. Live music too… although they butchered most songs attempted the crowd seemed to like it. It was noisy and rather ram shackled but the food was good. Very good – dry rub BBQ. Not so keen on the […]

US 1

Back onto US1 South – mostly single carriageway with moderate traffic today. With no real plans, we just cruised down. The Keys have a disjointed “style”. A mix of suburbia, strip malls, bait shops, tourist souvenir shops, shacks, mansions.. in most cases the view from the road could never be regarded as pretty. The bridges, both old and new, are […]

Key West

This is a tiny, but beautiful resort. Only 30 odd rooms and never feels busy or crowded. Just having a coffee and then setting off for Key West – no doubt with various stops en route. It’s only 50 miles away, but will take well over an hour to get there. No real plans when we get there. Already decided […]

Nothing…

A day of this… And this… Did a Publix run earlier to grab a couple of salad bowls and deli stuff for sandwiches. There is nowhere to go for food that doesn’t involve driving, so if you want to do cocktails, you have to meal plan accordingly!

Oysters.

Sunset is around 6:40pm – so decided to get an early dinner somewhere on the Gulf side of the Key and watch the sun go down. Managed to forget to photograph my oyster starter – both raw and baked. The food was pretty good. Whilst eating a local fisherman was selling his catch to the restaurant- his boat moored 15m […]

Bongos

Needed some bits from Walgreens (pharmacy like Boots), so popped into Marathon. Intention had been to go to the Wooden Spoon for brunch, but it was very busy. So we headed back past the resort and tried Bongos Cafe instead. Bongos is a cafe, botanical gardens, water sports, saloon bar, volleyball club… laid back beach bum vibe! Brunch was a […]
