Rain?

We headed out onto Ocean Drive. Dusk had rolled in and darker sooner with the hour going back at the weekend. The sky started to look a bit moody and suddenly we were hit by the sort of rain I’ve only encountered in a Florida. It’s like the raindrops are three times bigger here. We sheltered alongside some public restrooms […]

On the road again.

Wedged the cases in… surprisingly they fit, but only if inserted in a very specific method/sequence. A method so special, it always takes me three attempts to remember it. The drive itself was the exact reverse of our outbound journey. There aren’t many ways to get on or off the Keys. So, with the thundering v8 and transmission whine drowning […]

Good morning and Goodbye

Final morning and it’s another beautiful day here in the Keys. 100 mile drive to Miami… will set off at 11am and probably stop off for lunch on the way. This has been a very relaxing few days. I suspect South Beach to be a bit more frenetic.

Busy doing nothing

Spent the rest of the day doing almost nothing. watched the wildlife… Popped up the road to S S Wreck. A sports bar / restaurant. Less than a mile away, but a suicidal walk in the dark so we ended up having to drive. Watched the Tampa Bay Buccaneers snatch victory in the last minute of play on one of […]

Last full day in the Keys…

This is properly relaxing. I do wish there were a couple of food/drink options in walking distance. Having to drive everywhere is a faff. They are completing an on-site restaurant and bar (in addition to their current tiki bar). Still, with views like this…

Porky’s BBQ

We noticed this particular shack as we passed on our way to Key West. A proper BBQ pit and gets decent reviews. Live music too… although they butchered most songs attempted the crowd seemed to like it. It was noisy and rather ram shackled but the food was good. Very good – dry rub BBQ. Not so keen on the […]

US 1

Back onto US1 South – mostly single carriageway with moderate traffic today. With no real plans, we just cruised down. The Keys have a disjointed “style”. A mix of suburbia, strip malls, bait shops, tourist souvenir shops, shacks, mansions.. in most cases the view from the road could never be regarded as pretty. The bridges, both old and new, are […]

Key West

This is a tiny, but beautiful resort. Only 30 odd rooms and never feels busy or crowded. Just having a coffee and then setting off for Key West – no doubt with various stops en route. It’s only 50 miles away, but will take well over an hour to get there. No real plans when we get there. Already decided […]

Nothing…

A day of this… And this… Did a Publix run earlier to grab a couple of salad bowls and deli stuff for sandwiches. There is nowhere to go for food that doesn’t involve driving, so if you want to do cocktails, you have to meal plan accordingly!
